RAISED LATRINEOur Raised Latrine offers a sanitation solution that has been designed for use in urban areas or locations with a high-water table, following emergency situations, when digging to build a pit latrine is dangerous or not recommendable.
This Latrine showcases similar features than the Superstructure, but adding a tank where the waste is collected to avoid contamination. This is a key point in crisis situations, as diseases due to poor and unsafe drinking water, unimproved sanitation or poor hygiene still cause 4% of deaths and 5.7 of all disability or ill health in the world, according to the World Health Organization.
Dunster Design
As the Latrine Superstructures, our Raised Latrines are made of durable materials. Our pressure treated timber has had non-toxic treatment forced deep within the timber, helping to protect it against rot and insect infestation and ensuring the structure remains strong and secure. This also helps to ease the process of importing non-indigenous timber into different countries.
The main body of the latrine is made of 4mm special application corrugated plastic board that is UV stable, meaning it can withstand most weather conditions it is exposed to. The material is also low maintenance, really easy to clean and provides users with a safe and private environment.
Safety and privacy are key, so the doors of our latrines come with internal and external locking system, meaning door flapping can be avoided by closing the structure from the outside and safely unlock it from the inside. A different hatch can be used to lock from the inside ensuring privacy.
Pressure Treated timber stairs are provided to access the latrines raised on top of the tank. The treatment protects them against rot and insect infestation. They also come with wooden handrails on either of the sides, that are safely attached to the structure to ensure the safety of adults and children alike when using the toilets.
Waste TankThe waste tank consists of 6mm corrugated plastic for the sides and a 4mm base to help preventing any damage to the internal 9mm thick PVC liners. A single kit tank has a containment area of approximately 2m³, allowing it to potentially store up to 2000 litres of waste. The waste is collected and stored inside a waterproof liner and a polypropylene bag for easy removal.
The tank has two access points at the rear of the raised latrine, so there is no need to empty it from the squatting plate hole. One of the access points is designed for use by emptying pump and the other for maintenance.
Shipping and installationOur Raised Latrine is supplied in a single kit consisting of two Superstructures, a tank, a platform and a set of stairs with handrails. The kit has everything you need to construct the structure efficiently; exactly what is needed in an emergency situation.
The design also takes into consideration the importance of an efficient usage of the space for shipping, so they maximise the use of space in easy to store and transport flat-packs for a cost-effective result.
The materials we have used on our Latrine Superstructures are lightweight, making transport easy and cost effective. Often our Latrines need to be built quickly and, by making them from lightweight materials, we eliminate the need to struggle whilst working in often adverse conditions. Our Raised Latrine kits can be easily extended to create a row of latrines for use in heavily populated areas. It can also be used as just a single unit with the two superstructure latrines sitting upon it.
Optional Extras:
- 12v Off Grid Solar Lighting– Robust and simple kit, which allows access through the night.
